My First Concert Essay The young boy motioned with his arms where to park, as the vehicle came to a stop. My friends and I got out of the car and looked up to see a line of people waiting to get inside. I asked them So what now? , since this was my first concert, I did not know what to expect. They said, Hear that? I listened and heard music playing in the background. We started walking towards the end of the line that had formed. As we grew closer to the gate, the music got louder, and my heart beat faster. While waiting in line, we compared biceps sizes and talked about what bands were going to be playing. Finally, we got to the gate, gave the man our ticket and entered the arena. There must have been thousands of people all gathered here for this concert, drinking, talking, and getting tattoos done. We approached the stage where the first band was playing and everyone was at the one stage listening to the music. I took my shirt off and headed to a small fire that had been set on the ground. A circle had formed around the fire and people were pushing and swinging their arms as they ran around it. No one could hear anything else or knew anything else existed except for the sound of the music. The sun was setting,and the last two bands were going to play next, Slayer then Slipknot. Slayer entered the stage, and I knew this was a bad time to be near the enormous crowd that had formed in front of the stage. The last concert Slayer played at, the fans ripped their seats out of the ground, which had been bolted into solid concrete, just so they would have an area to mosh. When the band started to play, the crowd threw trashcans, bottles, CDs, anything at all, just because they wanted to create chaos. As I watched from the side, I saw people exit the crowd with cuts on their faces, and an ambulance stood ready for anything serious. There were three clouds of smoke from fires that had started, and I could smell the plastic that was used to fuel the fires. Even the police that were there did not try to put the fires out inside the crowd, for fear that they would get mobbed. After the band finished, the ground was covered with trash from the people. Slipknot was next, It was the band I had been waiting for the whole day. I knew if I did not get up front by the stage, I would not have a chance later on, because a few people had already begun to gather there. More people started to pour into the concert area just to see slipknot, by now there was more than double the amount of people that was here earlier just to see Slipknot. A black curtain with a pentagram was placed over the stage so no one could see what was going on behind. A few minutes passed and the crowd grew eager. The crowd started shouting Slipknot, Slipknot, Slipknot then what they were waiting for, a voice came out over the speakers. With the curtain still over the stage to taunt the crowd they called out Splipknot in a finnal effort to get band on stage. With that shout, the curtain droped and the band started to play. he crowd swayed from side to side crushing my chest, the mjusic was so loud it echoed through my chest. At one point, I could not breath and I felt like I was going to die. When it was all over, I knew I was going to have to go to another concert. Even though I was tired, and I smelled horrible from the sweat, the experience was something that I will never e ver forget. I never really liked the band Slipknot until I heard them in concert and I never really knew what music was or how it sounded until that day. Whenever I turn on the radio or listen to a CD, I cannot really get the feeling out of the music like I did at the concert.

A Guide to Caring for Bess Beetles Bess beetlesà are among the easiest arthropods to keep in captivity, and make excellent pets for young insect enthusiasts. As with any pet, its good to learn as much as you can about their habits and needs before you commit to keeping them. This guide to caring for bess beetles (also known as bessbugs)à should tell you everything you need to know about keeping them as pets. In North America, whether you purchase bess beetles from a supplier or collect your own, you will almost certainly be dealing with the species Odontotaenius disjunctis. The information provided here may not apply to other species, particularly tropical bess beetles. Things You Should Know Before Keeping Bess Beetles as Pets Although they are quite large and have powerful mandibles, bess beetles (family Passalidae) dont usually bite unless theyre being mishandled. They have thick, protective exoskeletons, and dont tend to cling to your fingers with their feet (like many scarab beetles do), so even small children can handle them with supervision. Bess beetles are easygoing, although they do squeak in protest when disturbed. Thats what makes them so much fun to keep as pets ââ¬â they talk! Bess beetles often burrow and hide during the day. Flip on the light switch at night, however, and youll probably find your bess beetles perched on top of their log or exploring their terrarium. If youre looking for classroom pets that will be active during school hours, bess beetles might not be the best choice. They do, however, cooperate if you wake them from their naps for a science activity. If youre looking for low maintenance insects, you cant do better than bess beetles. They eat their own poop as part of their diet, so you dont have to clean out their habitat. The only thing they need from you is a piece of rotting wood and a regular misting of water. No need to chop vegetables or keep crickets to feed them. Bess beetles rarely reproduce in captivity, so you dont have to worry about a population explosion in your terrarium. The unlikeliness of breeding also means they arent a good choice for classroom life cycle studies. Housing Your Bess Beetles To keep 6-12 adult bess beetles, youll need a terrarium or aquarium that holds at least 2 gallons. An old 10-gallon aquarium works well, fitted with a mesh screen cover. Bess beetles wont scale the sides of the container like roaches or stick insects do, but you should still keep their habitat covered securely. Put 2-3 inches of organic soil or peat moss in the bottom of the habitat to give the bess beetles a place to burrow. Sphagnum moss will hold moisture and help keep the habitat at a comfortable humidity level for your bess beetles, but its not necessary as long as you mist them regularly. à Place the habitat in an area out of direct sunlight and dont put it too close to a heat source. Bess beetles do well at room temperature, and dont need special heaters or lights. In fact, they prefer a dark environment, so you can tuck them away in a corner of the room where there isnt much light. Caring for Your Bess Beetles Food: Bess beetles are decomposers of fallen trees, and feed on rotting wood. The North American species Odontotaenius disjunctis prefers oak, maple, and hickory wood, but will also feed on most other hardwoods. Find a fallen log that is already decomposed enough to break with your hands. Healthy bess beetles will break a log down in short order, so youll need a regular supply of rotting wood to feed them. You can also purchase rotting wood from most science supply companies that sell bess beetles, but whats better than taking a walk in the woods? If youre keeping bess beetles in the classroom, ask your students to collect wood and bring it to school to replenish the habitat. Water: Mist the habitat once per day, or as needed, to keep the substrate and wood moist (but not soaking wet). If youre using chlorinated tap water, youll need to dechlorinate it before misting the beetles. Just let the water sit for 48 hours to allow the chlorine to dissipate before using it. Theres no need to purchase a dechlorinating agent. Maintenance: Bess beetles recycle their own waste (in other words, eat their own feces) to replenish the population of microorganisms in their digestive tracts regularly. These gut symbionts enable them to digest tough wood fibers. Cleaning their habitat would eliminate these important microorganisms, and possibly kill your bess beetles. So theres no need to do anything other than give your bess beetles enough wood and water to live. Other than that, leave them be, and they will do the rest. Where to Get Bess Beetles Many science supply companies sell live bess beetles via mail order, and thats probably your best bet to obtain some healthy specimens to keep as pets. You can usually get a dozen bess beetles for under $50, and in captivity, they can live up to 5 years. If you want to try collecting live bess beetles on your own, turn over rotting logs in hardwood forests. Keep in mind that bess beetles live in family units and both parents raise their young together, so there may be larvae living with the adults you find.

Bruce Feilers Walking the Bible Essay Bruce Feiler gives his readers new perspectives on the background of the events told in the Five Books of Moses, and on the Bible itself. The book is concerned with how the land itself had a deep influence (and still has a deep influence) on the bible and the spiritual culture of the people, and the author attempts to demonstrate how the bible is still relevant today. The book is an attempt to provide a cultural and historical context for the Bible. It is peppered with the authors thoughtful insights on the relationship of the land and its people, and relates the path of (re)discovery of faith as a result of the journey, while also providing a good starting point for anyone desiring to travel through the Middle East. The book, of course, is not an objective, scholarly work, and should not be taken as such. Although scholarly views of the events outlined in the five books and of the land and culture relevant to these events are presented, it is by no means a scientific work, as obvious from the religious theme of the book. Feiler takes the reader on a two-year exploration of the first five books of the Bible, by actually trekking through the land in which the events in the five books occur. The land itself is the focus of the book. He provides his insights on the effects of the land of the people, ancient and modern, and relates the views of the Jews on the relationship between god and the people. He describes the wilderness as instrumental in uniting the ancient Israelites as a people. He describes his experience in the desert, the journey through which Feiler states is the core of the first five books. It is in the desert where he experienced the ââ¬Å"raw human emotion involved in being in a stark place, confronting the limitations of ones upbringing, and trying to forge a new identity in the midst of a difficult, transforming journey. â⬠Feiler did not have a strong motivating purpose at the start of his journey, but he relates the significant change in attitude that the journey brought to himself. His initial intention was merely to be a tourist of sorts, using the Bible as a travel guide to experience and appreciate the land in which the events in the first five books of the Bible occur, but when he starts his journey, he finds out that there is a palpable ââ¬Å"connectionâ⬠between the land and the people, and he stops seeing the Bible as merely a travel guide. Through his journey he develops insights into himself concerning his faith, particularly on his identity as a Jew. Feiler ââ¬Å"rediscoversâ⬠his faith as a result of this journey, and provides some unique perspectives on the five books of Moses. Of course, as it focuses on the land, the book is also a travel memoir, a travel guide of sorts, providing useful tidbits for readers intending to journey there as well. Through his gustatory descriptions of geographical features, he manages to convey his impression of the sacredness of the land. He provides some background on scientific and historical arguments that have concerned the authenticity of the bible, but ultimately demonstrates that such concerns on empirical facts have little bearing on faith. He also outlines the influences of Israels relationships with neighboring lands, particularly Egypt and Mesopotamia, and how the culture of Israel was deeply connected to the land itself. The book focuses on faith, on history, and on travel, all in the context of the first five books of the Hebrew Bible. As a work of literature, it is not outstanding. As a travel memoir, it provides some useful and entertaining facts about the geography and culture of Israel. But the book is mostly focused on the author himself, on his views and insights gained from his journey; the book succeeds ultimately as a spiritual undertaking.

Although both Joseph Conrad and Franz Kafka distance their protagonists from conventional society to represent the shallowness of mankind, Kafka does so through internal changes whereas Conrad creates external changes. In Heart of Darkness, Conrad removes Marlow from accepted society to show how challenges man suffers through to survive on their own with the superficiality surrounding them. Kafka exiles Gregor in Metamorphosis to demonstrate the ignorance people have for others physically and mentally different from themselves through Gregorââ¬â¢s transformation and the isolation he endures. Both authors transition their main character into a new environment, and combine the new environments with different behaviors to live with. Conradââ¬â¢s shifting setting introduces new environments and attitudes for Marlow to cope with. Marlow begins the novel in ââ¬Å"a narrow and deserted street in deep shadow, [with] high houses, innumerable windows with venetian blinds, a dead silence, grass sprouting right and left, [and] immense double doors standing ponderously ajarâ⬠(Conrad 45). Nearly all of the surroundings have intimidating connotations, which surprisingly fight Marlow into a comfortably safe and secure standing. Marlow notices the map in the office, and examines it to see just where his travels will take him. After observing the map, he points out that he was not going to the points of Africa that seem welcoming but he ââ¬Å"was going into the yellow. Dead in the centre. Kafka exiles Gregor in Metamorphosis to demonstrate the ignorance people have for others physically and mentally different from themselves through Gregorââ¬â¢s transformation and the isolation he endures. Both authors transition their main character into a new environment, and combine the new environments with different behaviors to live with. Conradââ¬â¢s shifting setting introduces new environments and attitudes for Marlow to cope with. Marlow begins the novel in ââ¬Å"a narrow and deserted street in deep shadow, [with] high houses, innumerable windows with venetian blinds, a dead silence, grass sprouting right and left, [and] immense double doors standing ponderously ajarâ⬠(Conrad 45). Nearly all of the surroundings have intimidating connotations, which surprisingly fight Marlow into a comfortably safe and secure standing. A- QUESTION 1 1- Definition Business ethics is a form of professional ethics that examines ethical principles and moral or ethical problems that arise in a business environment. The definition of Ethical stance defined by Johnson and Scholes as: ââ¬Ëthe extent to which an organization will exceed it minimum obligations to stakeholders and society at large. There are four possible ethical stances existing and are stereotypes for any organization.(1) The first ethical stance is short-term shareholder interests; a company who stick very close to laws and regulations which are in place. In 1970s, the compact car Ford pinto, became a famous for its tendency in rear-end collisions to leak fuel and explode into flames. More than 20 people were killed or injured before the Ford Motor company issued a recall to correct the problem. The decision process behind the Pintoââ¬â¢s launch revealed that under intense competition from Volkswagen and other small car manufacturers, Ford has rushed the Pinto into production. Assess the View That Cults and Sects Are Only Fringe Organisations That Are Inevitably Short Lived and of Little Influence in Contemporary Society Essay
It can be argued that cults and sects are only fringe organisations that are inevitably short lived and of little influence in contemporary society, however some may have views to contrast this idea. A sect is an organization, which usually breaks off from an established religion, which finds itself in disagreement with beliefs and values of wider society and refuses to tolerate the beliefs of others. Although the desire to be a member is voluntary, as oppose to being born into, like religion, sects are rejected by society and claim strong obligation and commitment by its members. A sect is an extremely narrow-minded organisation, which is often led by a charismatic leader. Whereas, in contrast, a cult does not progress from a mainstream religion and does not reject or challenge societal norms. However, as tolerant of other beliefs as they are, they still attract a great deal of negative press, for example brainwashing. Members in a cult are usually more like customers than followers. An example of a cult is Heavens gate, which is a destructive doomsday cult, centered in California. There is a mass of supporting evidence that cults and sects are short lived and insignificant to wider society. Nevertheless, it must be maintained that the matter is complex as there are many sects and cults, which identify themselves differently. There is evidence to support this view of a short-lived nature of sects. This is due to many reasons. World rejecting sects, due to their nature and succeeding societal rejection and stigma of bad press, must be able to compromise with society and becoming a denomination and therefore cease to be a sect, if this is not done then the sect will die out. There is also an argument that sects cannot have a great deal of affect upon society over a long term period as they cannot survive past the charismatic leaderââ¬â¢s lifetime and therefore sustain themselves over more than one generation. The American theologian Niebuhr theorises that another reason for transience of sects is that they rarely live past the 1st generation because the 2nd generation usually lacks the belief of the 1st. In this way, their membership dwindles as the 2nd generation chooses to leave the sect and hold other views in wider society. However Wilson disagrees with Neibuhrs view and says that he overates his case and chooses to not pay attention to groups who did preserve a ââ¬Ë distinct sectarian stanceââ¬â¢. Similarly, evidence proves to discredit the belief that a sect fails to live on past their leaderââ¬â¢s death. For example, The Mormons have continued for many generations and also the Amish- however this could be attributed to the protective ââ¬Ëisolation-likeââ¬â¢ in which they live. There is also a possibility that the Moonies surviving is due to the leader preparing for his son to take over his position as the charismatic leader after his death, however this is yet to be seen. Cults have seen a large incline in their number recently and because they are more accepting of wider society and despite receiving bad press, offer a practical solution to peoplesââ¬â¢ issues and wishes, seem less likely to die out due to refusal and disapproval. They are also financially rather stable, the Church of Scientology for example has an estimated income of over à £200m per year. This is down to the consumer attitude of cults. There is also a mass of evidence for their importance in society in a sense that audience cults have a mass market of ââ¬Ëself help therapyââ¬â¢ there are many books available for example, tarot reading, crystals and reflexology regularly appear on the best seller list and often more room is devoted to these books rather than Christianity books themselves. The view that cults are fringe movements is less supported than that for sects. Sects very infrequently continue on as sects but cults such as scientology are not only prosperous but also have a huge celebrity following trend; admired by the public for example Tom Cruise. There is also evidence that sects and cults can be of great influence to society ââ¬â though it is debatable as to whether or not that is possible today in a society as apparently secular as ours. Weber suggests in his Theodicy of Disprivilege that because they offer a solution to problems: justification and explanation for life and its problems, to marginalised groups such as dropouts or ethnic minorities, world rejecting sects that offer status appeal to people. An example of this is Liberation Theology which was for the poorer people which had great influence upon the priorities of the Catholic Church in Latin America (though it has become more conservative, it continues to represent human rights and democracy). Bruce argues that it is not a religion and is instead a shallow, meaningless thing. Due to the elements of choice it offers, the choice about which bits to believe and whether to take its readings into account, it does not require commitment. This he argues prevents it having religious status. Post Modernists see it as being spiritual shopping: it is part of a consumerist culture. Despite not necessarily being a religion, there is lots of evidence to show that it has influenced society as a whole and, some sociologists would claim, aided secularisation. There is also evidence to show that it is unlikely to be particularly short lived as it fits in so well with our Capitalist, consumerist society and our individualistic values and is so profitable. Therefore, though there is strong evidence to show that sects and cults are ââ¬Ëfringe organisationsââ¬â¢, there is sufficient evidence to suggest that neither are short lived in themselves either through the Sectarian cycle or demand and supply (though sects tend to become denominations) and also to suggest that the influence of sects and cults on society is greater than expected; though the influence of sects and cults is exemplified by older examples and so one cannot be sure as to how successful they will be in todayââ¬â¢s society, except in regards to specific sects and cults. In conclusion, the view that cults, sects are fringe organisations that are inevitably short-lived and of little influence in modern-day society, is on the whole not wholly correct but has some strength in that the permanency of all is arguable as is their status as fringe organisations.

A Single Man (1964) by Christopher Isherwood
A Single Man (1964) by Christopher Isherwood Christopher Isherwoodââ¬â¢s A Single Man (1962) is not Isherwoodââ¬â¢s most popular or most lauded work, even after the recent Hollywood movie, starring Colin Firth Julianne Moore.à That this novel is one of the ââ¬Å"lesser readâ⬠of Isherwoodââ¬â¢s novels speaks volumes for his other works, because this novel is absolutely beautiful.à Edmund White, one of gay literatureââ¬â¢s most respected and prominent authors, called A Single Man ââ¬Å"one of the first and best models of the Gay Liberation movementâ⬠and itââ¬â¢s impossible to disagree. Isherwood himself said that this was the favorite of his nine novels, and any reader might imagine that it would be quite difficult to top this work in terms of emotional connectivity and social relevance.à George, the main character, is an English-born gay man, living and working as a literature professor in Southern California.à George is struggling to readjust to ââ¬Å"single lifeâ⬠after the death of his long-time partner, Jim.à George is brilliant but self-conscious. He is determined to see the best in his pupils, yet knows few, if any, of his students will amount to anything.à His friends look to him as a revolutionary and a philosopher, but George feels heââ¬â¢s simply an above-par teacher, a physically healthy but noticeably aging man with little prospects for love, though he seems to find it when determined not to look for it. The language flows beautifully, even poetically, without seeming self-indulgent. The structure ââ¬â like short bursts of thought ââ¬â is easy to keep pace with and seems to function almost in tune with Georgeââ¬â¢s day-to-day musings.à Whatââ¬â¢s for breakfast?à Whatââ¬â¢s happening on the way to work?à What am I saying to my students, but what do I hope theyââ¬â¢re hearing?à This is not to say that the book is an ââ¬Å"easy read.â⬠à In fact, it is emotionally and psychologically haunting.à Georgeââ¬â¢s love for his deceased partner, his loyalty to a broken friend, and his struggle to control lustful emotions for a student are effortlessly expressed by Isherwood, and the tension is brilliantly constructed.à There is a twist ending which, had it not been built with such ingenuity and genius, could read as something quite clichà ©.à Fortunately, Isherwood gets his point across without having to sacrifice his (or the readerââ¬â¢s) imme rsion into the plot line.à This was a balancing act pulled off immaculately ââ¬â truly impressive. One of the more disappointing elements of the book may be the result of the novelââ¬â¢s length.à Georgeââ¬â¢s simple, sad life is so ordinary but has so much promise; our understanding of this is largely due to Georgeââ¬â¢s internal monologue ââ¬â his analysis of every action and emotion (typically literary-inspired).à It is easy to imagine that many readers would enjoy getting more of the back story between George and Jim and more of the relationship (little as it existed) between George and his student, Kenny.à Some might be disappointed by Georgeââ¬â¢s kindness to Dorothy; indeed, readers have consistently expressed that they would not have been able, personally, to forgive such a transgression and betrayal. This is the only inconsistency in an otherwise wholly believable plot line, though, and will likely be subject to reader-response, so we can hardly call it an outright fault. The novel takes place in the course of one day, so the characterization is about as well-developed as it can be; the emotion of the novel, the desperation and sadness, are genuine and personal. The reader at times might feel exposed and even violated; sometimes frustrated and, at other times, quite hopeful.à Isherwood has an uncanny ability to direct the readerââ¬â¢s empathy so that she might see herself in George and thereby find herself to be disappointed in herself at times, proud of herself at other times. Ultimately, we all are left with the sense of knowing who George is and of accepting things as they are, and Isherwoodââ¬â¢s point seems to be that this awareness is the only way to live a truly satisfied, if not happy, life.

A lot of research is being conducted to explore Serious Games possibilities. This paper investigates the notion of games as means for learning/training Serious Games, will look to the available definitions, investigate its relations with other terms and categories Entertainment/ Learning /Gamification show its applicability, limitations and lastly we will suggest future studies to be conducted about it. Introduction: Todays serious games is a big and serious business; the serious game sector is expected to grow significantly in the medium term. In 7th of July 2010 IDATE (market analysis and consulting firm) released its Serious Games market report where is estimated that serious games in 2010 generated 1.5 billion EUR in revenue around the globe, and that by 2015 sales will be almost seven times what they are in 2010 with an average annual growth rate of 47% between 2010 and 2015. [1] A key question, when discussing serious games, is what the concept itself actually means. Even a brief survey of the literature soon reveals that there seems to be as many definitions available as there are actors involved, but most agree on a core meaning that serious games are (digital) games used for purposes other than mere entertainment. Another question of interest concerns the claimed positive effects of such games, or of applications from related and sometimes overlapping areas Entertainment, Learning and Gamification. In addition to obvious advantages, like allowing learners to experience situations that are impossible in the real world for reasons of safety, cost, time, etc. (Corti, 2006 [2]; Squire Jenkins, 2003 [3]). However, it is not the case that all games are good for all learning outcomes (van Eck, 2006 [4]). The aim of this paper is to take a closer look at some aspects of these issues. A lot of emphasis is putted into gaming, gaming types, gaming advantages and disadvantages. There been many studies about it, as people looking to it as the new innovative way that may enhance our life. We will start our research by defining Games in general to subset from it Serious games, then explore SG definitions, explore SG relation with Entertainment games, Learning and Gamification. After that we will look to SG attributes, applicability, limitations to finally suggest some potential research area. An overview of Games: This paper focuses on the domain of serious games and since SG is a subset of games we will take first a look at Game definition to conclude from their a start point for our research. A game is a system in which players engage in an abstract challenge, defined by rules, interactivity, and feedback, that results in a quantifiable outcome often eliciting an emotional reaction. By Koster is his seminal work A Theory of Fun [5] According to Caillois play and games fall on a continuum between what he terms ludus, rule bound games and paidia, anarchic playing, therefore we need first to differentiate between game and play. Whereas the word play is used for games as well as for toys, there is a difference. Following Caillois concept in his book Man, Play and Games (2001)[6] we can light on the difference, Caillois describes paidia and ludus as two poles of play activities. Where paidia (playing) describes free-form, expressive, improvisational behaviors and meanings, ludus (gaming), on the other side, characterizes rule-based playing with determined goals. In matter of serious games we are talking about ludus with a context of having a purpose behind playing the game. So we can define play as it is less the opposite of seriousness than the vital ground of spirit as nature, a form of restraint and freedom at one and the same time. (Gadamer, 1986) [7] The Concept of Serious Games: The term serious game is not new; the first time term was introduced by Clark Abt who discussed the term in his Serious Games book in 1970. [8] Serious games usually refer to games used for training, advertising, simulation, or education that are designed to run on personal computers or video game consoles. However searching the web, a number of different definitions are available, such as: Games that do not have entertainment, enjoyment, or fun as their primary purpose (Michael Chen, 2006, p. 21) [9] The use of computer game and simulation approaches and/or technologies for primarily non entertainment purposes by (PIXELearning.com, 2006) [10] Game-based learning/serious games is all about leveraging the power of computer games to captivate and engage end-users for a specific purpose, such as to develop new knowledge and skills. According to Corti (2006, p.1) [2] Serious game is a mental contest, played with a computer in accordance with specific rules, that uses entertainment to further government or corporate training, education, health, public policy, and strategic communication objectives. by Zydas (2005, p.26) [11] When comparing serious games with just computer games, Zyda argues that serious games have more than just story, art, and software. It is the addition of pedagogy (activities that educate or instruct, thereby imparting knowledge or skill) that makes games serious. However, he also stresses that pedagogy must be subordinate to story and that the entertainment component comes first. [11] Some consider fun the prime factor in games and education and, according to Prensky (2001) [12], games should be fun first and then should encourage learning. Similarly, Michael and Chen (2006) [9] argue, with regard to serious games, that the main point is to get players to learn something, and, if possible, have fun doing it. Fun, however, is neither the only form of entertainment, nor the only way to engage players in a game. Besides fun, there are several elements that contribute to players engagement. According to Corti (2006) [2], the motivational virtues of video games are what initially attract training and development professionals to turn to game-based approaches, but there is a lot more to game based learning/serious games than simply using fun as a means to engage learners. Related Concepts to serious Games: There are related and sometimes overlapping domains to Serious Games (Entertainment, Learning and Gamification) which we need to distinguish their relativity to Serious Games. Serious Gaming vs. Entertainment Gaming: An adequate question to ask is how serious games differ from entertainment games. The below table compare Serious Games and Entertainment Games from Michael and Chen (2006) [9] view points where they discuss it from a design and development perspective following four criteria to compare Task/Experience, Focus, Simulations and Communication Serious games Entertainment games Task vs. rich Experience Problem solving in focus Rich experiences preferred Focus Important elements of learning, To have fun Simulations Assumptions necessary for workable simulations Simplified simulation Processes Communication Should reflect natural (i.e., non-perfect) Communication Communication is often Perfect The differences between entertainment games and serious games -Table 1 For serious games it is more important for the players that the model or simulation can be used to solve a problem, than providing rich experiences of the kind sought by hardcore gamers. Further, for serious games it is essential that the most important elements of learning are in focus and that the assumptions necessary for making a simulation workable are correct, which if not; the simulation will teach the wrong kinds of skills. Entertainment games, on the other hand, allow players to focus on the fun parts and to use a number of techniques for simplifying the simulation processes. In serious games, Michael and Chen (2006) [9] argue, it may be important to rethink the use of such simplifying techniques. For example, serious games should respond more to the conscious decisions made by players than to chance, and therefore randomness may be inappropriate. Another example is communication, which often is perfect (i.e., without delays and misunderstandings, etc.) in entertainment game s, whereas some serious training applications should rather reflect that communication hardly perfect. As with simulations and serious games, the distinction between entertainment games and serious games is not very clear either. It is evident that it is the goal of the first to entertain, and of the latter to educate/train/inform the player. However in some situations entertainment games are used for serious purposes as well. In addition to that serious game designers, researches argue that fun can be a crucial element to motivate a player to continue playing a serious game. SG and Learning: The recognition and adoption of games as learning technologies has helped educators in utilizing games as a means for providing serious learning opportunities for players. With games understood as learning technologies, the question arises as to whats different about the learning when games compared to that typically within schools. One of the more obvious differences resides with the control afforded to the learner as player, where the state of control is typically afforded to players in games and teachers in schools. Games, therefore, present a learner-centered approach to learning, whereas traditional education presents a teacher-centered approach. The other different is that in games it is up to players to construct for themselves, their own knowledge, whereas in the latter, it is up to teachers to transfer knowledge to the learner. So the two processes of teaching and learning can be argued as quite different. Learning can be understood as a process whereby learners active construct knowledge through experience and interaction, whereas teaching traditionally is a process by which teachers distribute knowledge to learners through transmission The design of serious games games with a focus on education should be about creating meaningful experiences and activities for players, rather than a means for transmitting knowledge from the game to the player Serious Games and Gamification: Serious games and gamification are both trying to solve a problem, motivate people, and promote learning using game-based thinking and techniques. Serious games tend to take the approach of using a game within a well-defined game space, while gamification tends to take the use of a game outside of a defined space and apply the concept to items like walking up steps piano stairs. So we can say that serious games are created by using game-based mechanics, philosophy, and game thinking to engage people, motivate action, promote learning, and solve problems. In other words, they are created through the gamification of traditional learning content. Rules: The corollary to game mechanics are the rules of the game ,the constraints in game play that exist on every players actions and abilities Immersive graphical environment: This is the sensory representation of the experience layer of the game, including 2D/3D graphics, sound, and animation. This environment can be static (it resets at the end of each player session) or persistent (it continues to evolve even when a player isnt logged in). Interactivity: This focuses on the impact a players actions have on the world and includes issues of persistence and player interaction Challenge/competition: This is at the heart of any game. The competition might be against the game, against ones self, or against other players. Risks and consequences: These must attend every challenge, but they exist in the safe game environment where the consequences of an action or decision do not impact the real world. Serious Games Advantages: The idea of using games for work and in workplace generates a lot of excitement and appeal to both employer and employees. This excitement is a result of the advantages games. In addition, games are generally orders of magnitude safer than live training while still offering significantly realistic and useful training experiences. For example, Americas Army [AME 05] [17] Corporate: The use of games in the corporate environment represents one of the fastest growing sectors of the serious games industry. Companies like IBM, CISCO and other technically savvy companies already use simulations and games to motivate staff to learn specific job-related skills [18] Games for Good: Games for Good leverages game mechanics for social benefit. Games created for this segment of the industry hope to teach, train or simply generate awareness of a topic, an issue or a societal problem, therefore creating change in thinking, actions or attitudes. Limitations of Serious Games: Although games can be effective learning environments, not all games are effective, nor are all games educational. Similarly, not all games are good for all learners or for all learning outcomes. Dont make the game too easy: Easy learning games do not produce good learning outcomes. Learners are more likely to remember when things go wrong Use competition and/or collaboration: As competition motivates learners and collaboration allows social learning that is effective in motivating behavioral change. Test: Even the simplest games can have unexpected faults. Consider having learners create their own games: This can be useful exercises because it requires the student to think through the subject thoroughly and think of challenges they may like to have. Future Research: How to prove that Serious Games business is really worth it and how to calculate the ROI? I believe this is one of the hardest question facing serious games, as such a 1:1 relationship between a game and a desired outcome is often hard to tease out in something as nebulous as diversity training. Another interesting search area will be a Customized Serious Games design represents a new, complex area of design for the game world. Where designers have unique opportunities to make a significant contribution to game design, by organizing game play to focus on changing, in a predefined way, the beliefs, skills, and/or behaviors of those who play the game, while preserving the entertainment aspects of the game experience all based on different users needs. Conclusion: The fact that games are part of our everyday life in one way or another cannot be ignored; and examples can vary from our direct gaming plays a game on your smart phone or online using your social network profile with your direct intent to play to indirect gaming collecting points via grocery shop cards without your intent to play. Games main goal is entertainment, but they have more universal applicability that gave extra functions in various aspects of everyday life. Serious Games can be of any genre and many of them can be considered a kind of edutainment, but the main goal of a serious game is not to entertain, though the potential of games to engage is often an important aspect of the choice to use games as a teaching tool. When deciding to use a game for training, its important to clearly state your learning objectives and to determine exactly what advantages the game will provide to the player. If the game is too easy or too hard, or does not focus on the objectives, it may simply waste the learners time. Depending on the type of game you intend to use, you may need to go through a substantial testing phase to ensure success. A serious game is usually a simulation which has the look and feel of a game, but is actually a simulation of real-world events or processes. The main goal of a serious game is usually to train or educate users. Furthermore, in order to stimulate the learning effect of the players/trainees experiments, direct feedback from the game on the actions of the players is essential. Designing effective, engaging serious games requires theoretical understanding of learning, cognition, emotion, and play.

Ancient Civilizations :: History
While reading chapter one in our text book, I learned about the ancient civilizations that are no longer around. I noticed how different their cultures were from ours today. However, those are the foundations of who we are. Starting with the Paleolithic people, they were the groundwork for all humankind. Life for them was basic and simple. They didn?t wake up and wonder what they were going to wear. The men were hunters and gatherers, and the women were caregivers and producers. That is a theme relevant to even today. (men being dominant, etc?). As I read on, humans began to evolve after years and years. Soon humans were able to build structures using the post and lintel system. It seems the more we evolved the more we learned, and the more survival of the fittest played a part in the development of humans. I found the story of Gilgamesh very interesting. The fact he was seeking immortality but unable to attain it, represent humans always wanting things they can?t have. This is something everyone can relate to. It also incorporated the flood/ark part which I thought might have a connection with Noah?s ark ? especially since the time periods were very similar. One thing that sparked my curiosity, was how all of the ancient civilizations used hieroglyphics or symbols to communicate in writing. Today, many countries and cultures do not. They use the letters for their words and phrases. In fact, hieroglyphics is not really used in any place. The closest thing is probably Hebrew and Arabic which were derived from the ancient civilizations. Although not in America so much, religion is still a prevalent factor in cultures today just like they were in Egypt and Babylon. The old Kingdom had a very interesting method of ?judgement.? The Book of Dead was the evaluation was a huge part of their lives. Similar to our judgments found in some religions today. I think the middle kingdom was a time to learn and discover new theories and methods and time to figure out what works and what doesn?t. Prince Mentuhotep II was the leader and reunited Upper and lower Egypt. This was a great accomplishment because it brought peace and enabled the culture to prosper. The impression I got from the Old Kingdom to New, was that the old kingdom maintained traditions in the books.

For this reason, Bofah et al (2012) suggested that general infection control and universal precautions measures need to be taken into considerations when undertaking a clinical procedure. However, specific measures need to be taken into consideration when administering intravenous therapy especially those in the home setting and the vulnerable patients. Kampf et al (2013) conducted an observational intervention study on ââ¬Å"Improving Patient Safety during the Insertion of Peripheral Venous Catheters. The aim of the study was to determine the application of specific steps for peripheral venous catheters insertion in clinical practice and implementation of a multimodal intervention with an aim of improving both optimum order and compliance with the steps. Results indicated that 202 insertions were observed during the intervention period and 207 in the control period (Kampf et al, 2013). Compliance significantly improved for 4 to 5 steps that are 11.6% ââ¬â 57.9% for disinfection of hand before contact with the patient (Kampf et al, 2013). Skin antisepsis of the site of puncture compliance was high after and before intervention (99% after and 99.5% before). Specific steps performance in the correct order also improved, which is from 7.7% ââ¬â 68.6% when 3-5 steps were done. From the description of the intervention by partici pants, 46.8% said it was helpful, 46.8% as neutral and 6.4% as disruption (Kampf et al, 2013). This indicated that a multimodal strategy, of improving compliance with peripheral venous safety steps of insertion of catheter and optimum procedure performance, was effective and regarded as helpful by the health professionals. Bofah et al (2012) conducted a study, ââ¬Å"Peripheral Intravenous Therapy: Focus on Asepsis Systematic Literature Review.â⬠The aim of the study was to describe the principles that are involved in the preparation, management and administration of peripheral IV in the clinical setting. Systematic literature review was conducted on the published studies describing asepsis principles involved in the preparation, management and administration of peripheral IV in the clinical setting from the year 2005 to 2012 January (Bofah et al, 2012). The findings from the 1135 publications suggested that the healthcare professionals should consider the patients always as being susceptible. Additionally, practices of standardizations will help in a reduction of infection risk. Lastly, all healthcare professionals must be educated to ensure procedures and practices are consistent and are adhered to with the day-to-day practices (Bofah et al, 2012). Oââ¬â¢Grady et al (2011) developed guidelines for healthcare workers who insert the intravascular catheters and also for the people responsible for control and surveillance of infections in outpatient, hospital and healthcare hoe settings. The report was compiled by members of professional organizations that represent the disciplines of infectious diseases, critical care medicine, surgery, healthcare infection control, interventional radiology, anesthesiology, pediatric medicine, pulmonary medicine and nursing (Oââ¬â¢Grady et al, 2011). The guidelines are to provide recommendations that are evidenced based for preventing infections related to intravascular catheter. The major areas of emphasis by the guidelines include (1) training and educating healthcare workers who maintain or insert catheters;(2)using sterile barrier precautions maximally during central insertion of venous catheter; (3) using alcohol with >0.5% chlorhexidine skin preparation for antisepsis; (4) avoiding the routine central venous catheters replacements as a strategy of preventing infection;(5)using sponge dressing that are impregnated by chlorhexidine and short-term central venous catheters that are impregnated by antibiotic/antiseptic if the infection rate is not reducing despite adherence to strategy 1 to 4 (Oââ¬â¢Grady et al, 2011). The strengths of the current research of Kampf et al (2013)was that the methodology of observations applied provided direct access to the variables under consideration rather than relying on some form of self-report like asking questions in questionnaires and interviews. The strength of Bofah et al (2012) was that it used 1135 publications that were a good sample size. The guidelines recommended by Oââ¬â¢Grady et al (2011) had a strength of the input from different professional bodies and expert hence reliable. The weaknesses of Kampf et al (2013) research is that might be having observer bias hence undermined its validity and reliability. The weakness of Bofah et al (2012) was that systemic review was not done under a set of guideline and standards hence could be unreliable. The weakness of Oââ¬â¢Grady et al (2011) is that with the presence of many professionals, coming to a common ground in scenarios of disagreements affects the validity of the recommendations and guidelines. Future research should address pediatric infections and resistant organisms in Aseptic Technique for peripheral IV insertion. There are much evidence supporting current nursing practice on different techniques of IV insertion including aseptic technique. Moreover, guidelines have been provided by a collection of all relevant heath professional and organizations. In addition, the current nursing practice is the best since it is widely used, it is supported by many different researches, and it is standardized. Meaning all healthcare professionals have a standard procedure of practicing as elaborated in the guidelines agreed by all professionals and healthcare bodies. Conclusion In conclusion, the essay discussed the evidenced based Aseptic Technique for peripheral IV insertion. The essay defined Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation before detailing what the paper will analyze. Three studies has been analyzed, and their strengths and weakness discussed. The paper then provided an area for future research before elaborating that there is enough evidence supporting current nursing practice.
